What I do

Most of my paintings start with snapshots or 'stills' grabbed from video. Casual, opportunistic or clandestine, these allow me to capture off-guard moments - when subjects can be seen in their most 'natural' state (uncontrived and authentic), and most likely to reveal something deeper - Camera Vérité.

I use digital and on-the-canvas processes to respond to subjects found in this way, to the unplanned 'documentary' character of the raw image together with underlying or implied ideas, references and meanings.

In a process where representation, interpretation, expression and chance interact, each painting is an experiment - it's outcome uncertain. Most evolve slowly over a number of revisions, often leading me in unexpected directions.
